What can a massage treat?

Massage can reduce stress and tension; relieve headaches and migraines; release painful or tight muscles; reduce pain or tingling in arms and legs; rehabilitate injuries and aid in the prevention of new injuries; improve mind-body connection; improve circulation, posture and self image; strengthen the immune system and provide a nurturing touch.

What can I expect?

For your first massage, you will be asked to fill out a short health questionnaire since massage is not appropriate for some conditions. Your therapist will then discuss your areas of concern to be addressed. They will then leave the room while you undress and get under the covers on the table usually face down. Most full body massages are done sans clothing, though if you are uncomfortable you may leave your underpants on.

About your session

An hour is the most common length for a session. This is enough time for a deeply relaxing massage or a more in-depth treatment on a particular area, for instance low back pain, neck and shoulder pain. Longer appointments are available. Make yourself comfortable during your session. If we need you to adjust your position we will either move you or let you know what is needed. Otherwise, feel free to change position anytime you like to make yourself more comfortable.

How will a treatment feel?

Massage on normal tissue feels good. Treatment on an injury may be painful at first, but feel better in a few minutes. If you find there are areas that are more tender than others this is because there is greater tension in that area compared to surrounding tissue. We will usually work within your comfort level though some areas just plain hurt. The therapist will warn you of these areas and coach you on how to work through the discomfort. Always communicate with your therapist if the session needs more depth or less, they are happy to adjust their intensity to your comfort level.

How will I feel afterwards?

After a massage, most people feel very relaxed with an increase in wellbeing which can last for several days. Watch for further changes over the following days forof pain relief, increased mobility and stress reduction. With deep tissue styles there is the possibility of some soreness which will disappear in a few days. Be sure to inform you therapist if you experience soreness for more than a couple days so they can adjust subsequent sessions to reduce this.

What style should I get?

With the different types of massage styles available, no one type is perfect for everyone or every situation. Unless you know what you want and need we will customize each session for you based on questioning and what we find in your body as the session progresses. We will recommend self-care for after your session to help with your goals towards better health. Self-care suggestions will come in the form of either exercises, stretches, nutrition suggestions or referrals to other professionals. Our goal is to provide you with the most complete assistance towards your health goals that we are capable of within our expertise.
